What is Microsclerotherapy?

Microsclerotherapy is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat thread/spider veins, which are typically found on the legs or face. It involves the injection of a sclerosing solution (usually a chemical called slerovien or fibrovien) directly into the vein, causing it to irritate and collapse. Once the vein collapses, it is reabsorbed by the body, and blood flow is redirected to healthier veins.

Microsclerotherapy is typically used for smaller veins (like spider veins) that are less than 4 millimeters in diameter. The procedure does not require anesthesia.

How Does Microsclerotherapy Work?

  • Injection: A sclerosing agent is injected into the affected veins using a very fine needle.

  • Vein Reaction: The solution causes the vein lining to swell, which leads to the vein collapsing and eventually being absorbed by the body.

  • Blood Redirection: Once the vein is closed off, blood is naturally rerouted to other, healthier veins.

  • Gradual Fading: The treated veins gradually fade over time, with results usually visible within a few weeks to months.

Benefits of Microsclerotherapy

  • Effective for Spider Veins: It is primarily used to treat spider veins.

  • Non-surgical: It does not require surgery, stitches, or downtime.

  • Minimal Discomfort: The procedure is relatively painless, with most patients feeling only slight discomfort during the injections.

Microsclerotherapy Aftercare

After undergoing microsclerotherapy, proper aftercare is essential for the best possible results, minimising side effects, and ensuring a quick recovery.

1. Wear Compression Garments

  • Why: Compression stockings or tight leggins help support the veins as they heal and improve the absorption of the sclerosing agent.

  • What to Do: You will likely need to wear compression stockings/tight leggings for at least 48 hours. Compression helps reduce swelling and encourages blood flow through healthier veins.

2. Avoid Strenuous Exercise

  • Why: Excessive physical activity or strain can increase blood flow and pressure in the treated veins, potentially affecting the healing process.

  • What to Do: Avoid heavy exercise and activities like running, aerobics, or weightlifting for at least 48 hours. Light walking is usually encouraged as it helps improve circulation.

3. Limit Sun Exposure

  • Why: Direct sun exposure can cause the treated veins to darken and result in pigmentation changes.

  • What to Do: Avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after the treatment. If you must be outdoors, wear protective clothing and apply sunscreen to prevent pigmentation changes.

4. No Hot Baths or Saunas

  • Why: Heat can increase swelling and interfere with the healing of the treated veins.

  • What to Do: Avoid hot showers, saunas, or hot tubs for at least 1 week after the procedure. Stick to lukewarm water for washing.

5. Monitor for Side Effects

  • Why: While most side effects are mild, it's important to monitor for any unusual reactions.

  • What to Do: Common side effects include mild redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, which should subside within a few days to weeks. However, if you experience severe pain, increased swelling, ulceration, or signs of an infection (such as fever or pus), contact the clinic immediately.

7. Avoid Air Travel for a Short Period

  • Why: Extended periods of sitting and the lower oxygen levels during air travel may increase the risk of clot formation.

  • What to Do: If possible, avoid long flights for at least 2 weeks after your treatment. If flying is necessary, wear your compression stockings, stay hydrated, and move your legs regularly during the flight.

8. Follow-Up Appointments

  • Why: Follow-up visits allow your doctor to assess the results and monitor for complications.

  • What to Do: Attend any recommended follow-up appointments (usually within 4–6 weeks) to ensure the treatment was successful and that you are healing properly.

10. Gradual Improvement

  • Why: The full results of microsclerotherapy may take time to appear.

  • What to Do: Understand that the treated veins may take 4–6 weeks or longer to fade completely, and multiple treatment sessions may be required for optimal results.
